Hidden Grief for the Sacred Feminine

Where is the Sacred Feminine? The Sacred She has been erased. Most Western cultures only recognize a male god. Are we going to stand for that?

Going to Hell?

I’ll probably be joining the authors I’ve been reading for saying this, but it’s true.
There used to be a goddess named Asherah. She was worshipped by early peoples in the eastern Mediterranean lands. And, get this, she is included in early accounts of Yahweh as his consort. Some ancient texts even say she was worshipped in the temple along side Yahweh. Where’s the proof?

It’s in The Book

Scripture is commonly used as justification for reasoning. Right in the first chapter of The Book, we find, in Genesis 1:26, “Let Us make man in Our image according to Our likeness; and let them rule” over the beasts, etc. Asherah isn’t named in Chapter one, but “Us” created humans, male and female, and they were equal.

Language Matters

The words “Us” and “Our” indicate at least two Creators. And, since the human race is male and female, the part that says “in Our image according to Our likeness” indicates the Creators were probably male and female, too.

Where is the Sacred Feminine?

In Chapter 2 of The Book, we see humans created again. This is where we find the Adam’s Rib story, subordinating the female. Why tell of creating man and woman as equals by simple command, then tell it again using mud and a rib? Something’s fishy.

Re-Write!

The men who wrote and re-wrote the accounts in The Book decided that the Goddess got in the way of their story line.  She was loved by the people, so had to be quietly erased. Asherah was changed from a living goddess to a wooden statue or tree that was labeled evil, and systematically destroyed. So, from then on, the Sacred Feminine was officially dead. But not in the hearts of the people.

Living in a Broken Home

The memory of a Divine Couple, the Sacred Masculine and the Sacred Feminine, once officially destroyed, played on in the background, a forbidden fantasy or dream. Like children of a broken home, our ancient foremothers lived without the missing mother. Their grief is in our DNA. Whether we can identify it or not, it affects us.

We Need to Fix This

Rather than leave the balance of male and female off kilter, it’s our challenge to restore the Sacred Feminine to her rightful place in our spiritual lives. She is needed to counter the dominating male energy, to bring us back to love for life, nature, and each other. It may take a while, but it will make the world a better place.
